Gowlings' IP department is an excellent place to get a broad exposure to all aspects of IP law. The work varied from pharmaceutical patent litigation to small claims and pro bono copyright work. The lawyers are approachable, willing to teach and lead by example. Although the work is demanding, the support provided by Gowlings and their investment in your training and summer experience is excellent.

Choosing Gowlings was the right choice! I worked in the litigation department where I was exposed to a variety of work. I had the benefit of a long term project throughout the summer which allowed me to develop relationships with a small group of lawyers while experiencing a variety of work. At the same time, I was able to take on other interesting projects from an array of practice groups. The work was diverse, interesting and challenging; it was exactly what I would have hoped for.
The work I received at Gowlings was first-rate, I believe it is the people you work with, from assistants to lawyers, who make the experience memorable. Gowlings provided the right people: open, willing to help, funny, engaging and interested are all accurate ways to describe the people I worked with at Gowlings. It is an environment that promoted learning, hands on experience and professional development while surrounding me with fun and engaging individuals.
I consider myself lucky to have found a place at Gowlings. It was without a doubt the best choice for me!

I had an excellent summer experience with Gowlings. The work I did was consistently challenging and interesting. Each day gave me the opportunity to learn by confronting a legal question or an area of law I'd never dealt with before. Without exception, I felt that the lawyers gave me work that mattered, not work to keep me busy. I was always made to feel that my contribution to a file was important and appreciated.
I spent my summer in the business group. Although summer students don't rotate, there was enough flexibility in the program that I could seek out work in particular areas of interest. This flexibility was important to me, as I wanted to gain exposure to a wide variety of practice areas before focusing my career goals.
Gowings' mentoring system deserves special mention. My formal mentor was wonderful, and very generous with her time. She was always available to give me advice, whether regarding how I should approach an assignment, the direction my career should take, or how to manage the demands on my time. Additionally, I found several unofficial mentors – lawyers who genuinely took an interest in my professional development.

The great thing about a firm as large as Gowlings is the diversity of practice areas that the firm deals in. That means that whatever your interests are you are likely to find lawyers who are practicing in that area. Gowlings encourages its students to seek out lawyers who they would like to work with, which means your summer work experience will be one that suits your particular interests.
The support services and educational programs at Gowlings are comprehensive and ensure a smooth transition into your summer. But most importantly, the lawyers and administrative staff are friendly, easy-going and always willing to take time to help you get your bearings and provide instructions. Summering at Gowlings was a first-rate experience.

My articles at Gowlings provided me with a solid foundation to practice business law as an associate. More than anything, the lawyers in the firm take their roles as mentors seriously and seek to provide the kind of guidance and support that is second to none. Such a working environment not only strengthens the bonds of collegiality but also forges new and lasting friendships with both partners and other associates. My intensive business law rotation also provided me with that much needed and sought after "hands-on" experience with different types of transactions across a broad range of industries.
