What kind of students are you looking to hire?
We're looking for dedicated, well-rounded individuals who are passionate about the practice of law, but who also maintain interests outside of school and work. At Gowlings we're all about the team, so we want people who recognize the value of teamwork, but who can also work independently when the occasion calls for it.
Does it matter to Gowlings which law school a student attends?
No. Gowlings Toronto recruits from all law schools across the country and elsewhere and considers each application equally.
How many professionals does Gowlings have across the country (as of May 2010)?

How would you describe the Gowlings culture?
The atmosphere at Gowlings is best described as professional and informal. More than a leading law firm, Gowlings is a community of professionals…a community in which every individual contributes and every idea counts. Gowlings people work together to achieve meaningful results for our clients. Beyond providing our students with professional growth opportunities, we also encourage them to develop social connections. We make time for friendships and organize numerous social activities for both our summer and our articling students.
How many students do you hire?
For Summer 2010, we will hire 16 students. For the 2009/10 articling term, we have 17 students, all of whom summered with us in 2008. For the 2010/11 articling term, we will also have 17 articling students, all of whom summered with us.
Do you hire first year law students?
No. Gowlings Toronto summer program is generally limited to students who have completed their second year of law school. However, each year we do accept applications, in the event positions become available.
What salary and benefits do you offer the students you hire?
Our commitment to our students includes a competitive salary, based on the market rate for articling students – currently $75,400 per annum, plus vacation pay, for both our summer and articling students. Articling students also receive a $4,000 pre-articling bonus. Articling students receive generous medical and dental benefits and two weeks' paid vacation. In addition, we pay the Licensing Process tuition fee for our articling students, as well as their salary during the exam and Skills phase.
What is your hire-back record for articling students?
Student hire-back varies each year. In 2007, we hired 12 of 16 students who wished to be considered plus one additional student who returned to our Ottawa office. For September 2008, we hired 13 of 15 students who asked to be considered. In 2009, we hired 5 of 18 students who asked to be considered.
  Do you have secondments?
Yes, Gowlings Toronto often offers external rotations. For the 2009/10 term, we will second students to Scotiabank, the Royal Bank of Canada, and the Toronto Community Housing Corporation.
What is the typical workload for students and associates?
While we do not set a target number of hours for our students, they are generally expected to carry a workload similar to that of our associates. The annual target for Gowlings Toronto associates is 1750 docketed hours, which means approximately 35 docketed hours per week.
How is work distributed to the students?
Students receive work directly from the professionals in the Firm but are also encouraged to seek out the work in which they are most interested. Our students participate in weekly work allocation meetings to ensure equality of work distribution and exposure to a variety of skill sets and professionals within the Firm for each of our students.
Does Gowlings offer firm tours in the summer?
Yes. We will offer firm tours on June 16, July 21 and Aug 25, 2010 at 4pm. Please contact Natalie Zinman if interested in attending. If none of the dates are convenient, please let Natalie know as other dates may be scheduled as necessary.
