The educational approach taken by Gowlings towards students smoothed the transition to the world of work. Regular seminars held for students by some of Canada's leading practitioners ensured that my learning did not end after law school finished. Through the rotation system, I gained exposure to fundamental concepts of many practice areas. Despite knowing that I may never practise in some of these areas, I was glad to gain high-level experience and a knowledge that I can carry with me in future dealings with other lawyers. Gowlings makes a concerted effort to establish a comfortable environment for students. The mentor system, support staff and regular student events all contribute to this. Social events that make use of some of Ottawa's greatest attractions also enhance the student experience. Despite the size of the Firm, students are made to feel at home and are immediately accepted as part of the "team" environment. Constructive feedback from lawyers is both educational and conveys to students that what they are doing is appreciated and important. My experience as a student allowed me to have real responsibility on files which has proved invaluable in the transition to the associate level.
