The best parts of my articling experience at Gowlings Hamilton was the variety of interesting work and the feeling of being a valued member of the team. Throughout my articling term, the lawyers made sure that I had the opportunity to experience as many aspects of the law as possible, including researching and developing legal arguments for an appeal to the Ontario Court of Appeal, preparing for trial, drafting a shareholders agreement, as well as attending at motions, judgment debtor examinations and landlord and tenant hearings. The lawyers were always available to answer any questions that I had and encouraged me to contribute my ideas and opinions. Articling at Gowlings Hamilton was truly a positive and invaluable experience for me!

Working at Gowlings Hamilton in the summer of 2006 was truly an enriching and rewarding experience. The summer program offered me the chance to work in all the practice areas of the firm, including commercial and banking litigation, real estate, business, and tax. I received challenging and thought-provoking assignments from day one, along with constant guidance and support. After my first few weeks at the firm, I had gone to the Court of Appeal to watch a case being argued that I had helped research, I had attended at the Superior Court and the Rental Housing Tribunal and I had drafted many memorandums, case summaries, and factums. All the associates and partners were friendly and encouraging, and no matter how busy their schedules they always took the time to make sure I was getting the best learning experience possible from every project I was working on.
What really attracted me to Gowlings Hamilton was that it offers the benefits of a large full service firm with a world class reputation, while at the same time offering all the benefits of a smaller firm. I was working on large national files, with access to a national network of resources at my fingertips. At the same time, I got to know everyone at the office and really felt like part of the Gowlings Hamilton community. I sincerely look forward to continuing with the firm as an articling student, and I would not hesitate to recommend Gowlings to any prospective summer or articling students.

Gowlings Hamilton is an ideal place to article. Lawyers and staff demonstrate a dedication and commitment to students, and foster an environment that promotes learning and professional development. The size of the office allows students to work closely with, and get to know, everyone from the managing partner down, all of whom are willing to share their considerable knowledge and expertise. Gowlings Hamilton fosters a sense of community in the workplace through staff breakfasts, professional lunches, athletic events, and this year they turned the ground floor of the office into a stage and held a jazz concert for charity. All of this combines to make Gowlings Hamilton and exciting and rewarding place to work.
The work itself is diverse, interesting and challenging; everything that I desired in an articling experience. I have gained knowledge and experience across a wide range of areas. In my first six months I have worked closely with partners on trials, appeals, and business closings; prepared independently for a two day trial, including researching the law, preparing witnesses, and drafting opening and closing submissions; represented clients in various court proceedings; had full responsibility for small claims files; interviewed potential clients; and experienced the business side of legal practice through my involvement in a Request for Proposal process. Every day I look forward to the new and exciting challenges that await me. This diverse experience, and exceptional environment for education and growth, has provided a well-rounded articling experience that I am confident has prepared me for the obstacles that I may encounter in my legal career.
