What kind of students are you looking to hire?
We're looking for dedicated, well-rounded individuals who are passionate about the practice of law, but who also maintain interests outside of school and work. At Gowlings we're all about the team, so we want people who recognize the value of teamwork, but who can also work independently when the occasion calls for it.
Does it matter to Gowlings which law school a student attends?
No. Gowlings Hamilton recruits from all law schools across the country and elsewhere and considers each application equally.
How many professionals does Gowlings have across the country (as of May 2010)?

How would you describe the Gowlings culture?
Gowlings Hamilton prides itself on its congenial, professional atmosphere, made possible by the relatively small group of remarkable professionals that make up our staff. Able to offer the quality of work associated with a national law firm, the Gowlings Hamilton office provides a unique opportunity to develop national experience, while working in a smaller office and in an affordable community.
How many students do you hire?
We have three articling students for the 2009/10 term and the 2010/11 term and three students for the summer of 2009.
Do you hire first year law students?
Gowlings Hamilton summer program is generally limited to students who have completed their second year of law school.
What salary and benefits do you offer the students you hire?
Our commitment to our students includes a competitive salary, based on the market rate for students. Currently, our articling students are paid $60,000.00 per annum, and our summer students are paid $54,080.00 per annum. Summer students who are hired back to become articling students the following year also receive a generous pre-articling bonus paid at the beginning of their third year of law school. Articling students receive generous medical and dental benefits, two weeks' paid vacation, and a fitness membership subsidy. In addition, we pay the Law Society's Licensing Process Fee for our articling students, as well as their salary for the two-week period around the Solicitor and Barrister Licensing Examinations.
What is your hire-back record for articling students?
Student hire-back varies each year, depending upon the availability of work and the students' preferences:

2004/5 - 3 of 3 students

2005/6 - 0 of 1 students ( two students declined to be considered - one clerked with the Federal Court and one moved away from Hamilton)

2006/7 - 2 of 3 students

2007/8 - 2 of 4 students (a third student was hired by our Waterloo office)

2008/9 - 3 of 3 students
  Do you have secondments?
To date, students have been seconded infrequently to external organizations on an ad hoc basis, depending on the availability of suitable opportunities and students, and on resource constraints.
What is the typical workload for students and associates?
While we do not set a target number of hours for our students, they are generally expected to carry a workload similar to that of our associates. The annual budget for Gowlings Hamilton associates is 1750 docketed hours, which means approximately 35 docketed hours per week.
How is work distributed to the articling students?
Gowlings Hamilton has three rotations: business law/intellectual property, recovery services and commercial litigation. During their rotations, articling students receive work directly from the professionals in the firm who practice law in the field of their rotation, but may also seek out work within their rotation in which they are most interested. In some cases, where appropriate, students continue to carry files from an earlier rotation until they are completed. This is not only more efficient, but also allows students to deal with all aspects of a file from beginning to end. In addition, each student has a lawyer in the firm who acts as the student's principal. Principals assist students in managing their workload (including helping them to get work in which they have a special interest) and advise students about all manner of work-related and professional practice issues and concerns.
How is work distributed to summer students?
There are no rotations for summer students. Students receive work from most professionals in the firm. Students may also seek out work in which they are most interested. In addition, each summer student has a lawyer in the firm who acts as the student's mentor. Mentors assist students in managing their workload (including helping them to get work in which they have a special interest) and advise students about all manner of work-related and professional practice issues and concerns.
